Twelve traditional Hungarian folktales are given new life in this wonderful collection by May McNeer and Charlotte Lederer. The material which formed the basis of these tales was painstakingly collected by Charlotte Lederer, from archives and other sources. She wishes to acknowledge indebtedness to the following Hungarian authors, in whose writings some of these folktales first took definite shape; Mikszath, Yokai, Gardonyi, and Mora.

May McNeer Ward (1902 - 1994). May McNeer wrote extensively for what she called “medium age” children, chiefly on historical subjects. She is survived by her daughters, Robin Ward Savage and Nanda Ward.

Charlotte Lederer was a noted writer and illustrator. Born Charlotte Backskai, probably in Hungary, Charlotte and her family immigrated to America in 1912. Some of her books include Malou: A Little Swiss Girl, The Children of the Rising Sun, The Magic Cock, The Golden Flock, Ginevra, Made in Hungary, and Tinka, Minka, and Linka.
